Getting mental health care can help you learn to overcome your challenges and meet your goals. If you’re looking for psychotherapy in North Carolina, consider online therapy. While there may be mental health clinics and independent practices in the state, it can be challenging to find in-person treatment. An online therapy platform like BetterHelp can help you overcome barriers like a lack of in-network providers or transportation challenges.

With BetterHelp, you can work with a mental health professional who will guide you through the counseling process from the comfort of your home at a time that works for you. While BetterHelp does not currently offer treatment to children or adolescents, experienced providers are familiar with various treatment modalities that provide individual therapy to young adults, middle-aged people, and seniors.

Therapy can help you overcome a number of challenges, including improving low self-esteem, learning healthy coping skills, navigating family conflicts, or undertaking self-exploration. If you’re looking for a therapist, NC has many telehealth services available. The providers below are licensed to provide therapy across North Carolina and can help you take steps toward living your best life.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina with 9 years of experience working as a therapist. I have worked with clients of various ages and circumstances with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, anger management, and motivation. I also helped many people who have experienced trauma and individuals with chronic pain. I take a holistic approach to treatment taking into consideration physical health, spiritual health or values, relationships and emotional/mental/behavioral health. People sometimes get into a pattern of thoughts or behaviors that cause them to feel stuck in life. Our work together will be making deliberate attempts to make a change in your viewpoints, thoughts, feelings, or behavior leading to solutions to your concerns. We will build on your strengths in the change process and help you develop small steps to take to make the changes you desire. You can view this experience like a person panning for gold in a river who finds occasional flecks of gold in their pan. After several pieces of gold are found, you have enough gold to form a nugget. Each small step you take will be like a fleck of gold that will add up to valuable change in your life. Our work together will be helping you develop the skills necessary to resolve not only your current concerns but also prepare you to manage other concerns in the future. It does not have to take years of therapy to see a difference in your life. I use a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Solution Focused Therapy to help you make the changes you want in life. Our work together will be much different than talking to your friends or family. I will be able to give you unbiased, nonjudgmental feedback and support. It is important for you to be honest with yourself and me so that we can have the most effective experience together. I am sure your expectation of therapy is to feel better and get help with your concerns. My expectation is for you to work on the steps or changes we agree would be helpful between sessions. I am here to help and support you but I can’t do the work for you. You will not be alone on this journey of change. Change can feel scary but it doesn't have to be difficult. If you are ready to start making changes, I'm here to help empower and support you as well as give you the tools for change. I look forward to working with you!

HELLO. Thank you for stopping by. My name is "AC" (Alisha) and I am a licensed professional counselor. Thank you for stopping by :-) I am trained clinically as a therapist. However, the reason I do this type of work is for a much deeper and meaningful reason. I will have to take you to the past for a moment. I have religious roots but they were not good ones in terms of helping me understand the things that I was struggling emotionally. If those challenged endured for a long time, there was really no help. It was summed up as not having "enough" faith. Tired of hearing this sentiment, I pursued counseling for Christians who felt like they were faithless because they had struggles. I wanted to stop this from perpetuating one person at a time. What you can expect from a counselor who is a Christian? You can expect that you will not be shamed into thinking that you do not have enough faith. In fact, we may not even talk about faith in sessions unless you ask for that. I say to people that I am a Christian so that you know my core values. Do I have people that do not share the same values? I sure do... not to talk about my values but what you are seeking relief in with kindness and care. Before we do: Here are a few things to expect: 1. Nervousness-What will happen? How will I feel? What should I say or not say? There are questions that can cause some nervousness. Just remember, everything that you have experienced is part of the human experience. Say what you want if you want, when you want. 2. Feeling like what's the Point-"I don't feel a change". Some times a light will flicker in therapy BUT not always in every session will that occur. But whether it occurs in real time or not, what we talk about is always working on you consciously or subconsciously. You will know when you notice that a new way of looking at something happens and think to yourself, "That is a new though or different reaction that I had." This delayed reaction to a therapy session is actually more common! 3. Frustration-As you do your "work", you'll notice that people who you are in relationship have not. Learning how to take your new found skills and freedom into the world takes a new perspective. Who are you now regardless of all circumstances is the question that you will be able to answer. This means that despite what others do or don't do, you will be OK. 4. It is time to Fly- You will find at some point in your personal work that you are not as distressed and you are better able to manage thoughts that once brought you distress. You are spreading your wings and will not have an imminent need for counseling. No matter when this occurs for you, I want you to fly. It may be time for you to end your subscription and do just that. If a few weeks have passed and you have not used the service, you are likely taking flight on something new that you discovered. Please Fly High. No need to feel as though you have to maintain your subscription "just in case". You can always come back later if you'd like. 5. Flexibility and Persistent pesky gnats. That is what I am calling thoughts and feelings that just need time to stop appearing and biting. Do not feel odd if you still fight to fan off pesky thoughts. Likely there is a "holding on" to a thought, belief, image, or something else that you have not fully released. This is where the need for flexibility comes in. You will have to be flexible and not hold on rigidly to the way you have interpreted things (even though you are sure that you are "right") . Even if you are right, you still may be left feeling less than free. Counseling is a good tool to see what is left in your thoughts that need to be re-worked. 6. Never Compare Yourself to Others. Do the best that you can do. That is Enough. Appointments: You are free to choose any time that you see on the calendar. If you need to verify that your time zone is reflected accurately, know that I am in the Eastern Time Zone in the US (EST time). Your time zone as listed on your account will be seen. If you travel outside that time zone, a good app is World Time Buddy to verify. My commitment to you is that I will be on-time and prepared for your session. I will not respond to other clients while I am in session with you. Should I have to reschedule an appointment, I will do that as soon as possible, likely days in advance as not to disrupt your plans. I will then get you reschedule ASAP. If I have an personal emergency and need to cancel the next day, I will inform you promptly of my situation and when I will be available. I ask that you take the same care when scheduling or cancelling. PLEASE NOTE: The Golden Rule Policy for No-shows or a Same Day cancellation. Please cancel 24 hours in advance. This allows for your block to be used. Cancellations that occur the same day, prevents anyone else from scheduling in that time. Emergencies do happen and I take a person's word for it without explanation. The honor system is enough :) In the case of a true emergency, you are free to reschedule as you wish. Crises and emergencies are rare. However, should 2 emergencies occur resulting in you not maintaining your appointment, please talk to me so that I can understand your unique needs before attempting to reschedule. If the no-show/same-day cancellation was for any other reason and you would like another appointment, I ask that you message me and Request a Same- Day appointment. I will give you the times that are open for the day you contact me. This it lessens the chance of a repeat no-show and I can serve efficiently. Have a lovely day, AC

From time to time, life presents itself as a series of obstacles with some higher than others. I prefer to see problems as a positive challenge to embrace life and seek positive growth that we can do for ourselves. Seeking help is hard enough, and it's my job to ease the process by offering my clients a warm, empathetic, and safe place to address their challenges. If you are struggling with a particular issue, or prefer a safe place to express yourself, I am happy to help you explore your issues. I have been a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina since 2007 (we were originally called Licensed Professional Counselors, but that changed a few years ago). During my career, I have worked with adolescents and adults. In any therapeutic interaction, it is important to initially develop a relationship with my clients to develop an environment that promotes empathy, understanding, and support. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, various approaches drawn from Narrative Therapy, Redecision Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing strategies. We will discuss these approaches to match your needs and preferences while we are in session together. My areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, addiction, chronic pain and health issues, trauma, bereavement, disability-related issues, and adjusting to many of the challenges that life presents us. I use a client-centric approach (meaning YOU are the expert on you) that will allow you to identify your strengths and abilities. I look forward to meeting you and speaking with you!

I am a doctor of clinical psychology and a licensed psychologist. My particular areas of expertise are in working with: teens, young adults, and parents; anxiety and depression; neurodiversity (such as ADHD and autism); and LGBTQ+ individuals and families. At this time, I'm only offering messaging-based services. This consists of asynchronous (not "live"), text-only conversations between the two of us. If you think that messaging might be a good format for your individual therapeutic or parent coaching services, please reach out and I'll be happy to discuss it with you further. I'm originally from The Triangle in NC, but I lived outside of Philadelphia for over ten years. During that time, I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Swarthmore College, as well as my masters & doctoral degrees at Widener University's Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology. I completed the following tracks & concentrations in my doctoral program: Diversity & Cross-cultural Psychology; Children, Adolescents, & Families; and School Psychology. My internships during my doctoral program were at: a public school; a community mental health center for kids, teens, & families; and an inpatient drug & alcohol rehabilitation facility. Upon returning to my home state in 2020, I worked primarily with LGBTQ+ teens, young adults, and their parents for three years in private practice. I approach individual therapy and parent coaching with warmth, acceptance, and compassion. I use an integration of third-wave therapies – such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), & Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) – and Family Systems. I'm particularly passionate about taking an intersectional, trauma-informed, gender-affirming approach to supporting LGBTQ+ young people and their families. I go by "Katherine" or "Dr. Ernst," and my pronouns are she/her. I live in The Triangle with my partner, along with our rescue dog and cats. I openly identify as a queer, disabled, Arab-American woman.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Some of the most commonly asked questions about therapy can be found in the section below.

How much does a therapist cost?

Mental health professionals can differ in price. Forbes found that the average cost of in-person therapy in the US is around $100 to $200 per hour. Pricing can also vary based on your location.

BetterHelp offers payment plans of $60 to $90 per session, charged monthly in a lump sum. You can also take advantage of this pricing on one of BetterHelp's sister platforms, like ReGain for couples or TeenCounseling for teens aged 13 to 19.

Many therapists may be upfront about their pricing and whether or not they take health insurance from the beginning. Additionally, some in your area may offer a sliding scale plan to allow those with lower incomes to pay less for therapy. However, services online can often save individuals a few hundred dollars per month.

When should I get a therapist in North Carolina?

Mental health services and mental health providers may help you navigate various concerns. You do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy; You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general advice. A counselor may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Mental health issues don't always present as a crisis. Many professionals provide talk therapy and support for life transitions, skills learning, relationship problems, or life coaching. Online therapy sessions can allow clients seeking therapy to experience professional help through video, phone, or live chat sessions without commuting to an office.

Does insurance cover the cost of therapy?

Different counseling services can vary in cost. Therapists must apply to accept insurance through insurance companies, which may take time and money, so not every therapist offers services through insurance. If you cannot find a therapist that accepts your plan, BetterHelp may be cheaper than visiting an in-person therapist.

Is online therapy the safe option?

Online therapy through BetterHelp and its sister platforms is safe. Therapists are licensed, experienced, and vetted before being contracted with the platform. If you experience any concerns with your therapist, you change your counselor through the platform or app at any time.

In today's fast-paced society, mental well-being has become a cornerstone of a fulfilling life. Amid the daily challenges and stressors that can overwhelm even the most resilient individuals, seeking professional guidance often offers a path to clarity and balance. The journey toward improved emotional health involves understanding personal triggers, embracing self-compassion, and developing effective coping strategies. While self-help books and online resources provide valuable information, nothing compares to the personalized support offered by a qualified mental health professional. One-on-one sessions with experienced experts can help uncover the underlying issues contributing to anxiety, depression, or other emotional hurdles. With a careful and empathetic approach, these professionals tailor their advice to suit individual needs, ensuring that each person receives strategies that work best for their unique circumstances. Whether through cognitive behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, or other innovative methods, the aim is to foster resilience and empower individuals to take control of their inner lives. For those living in bustling urban centers, engaging in face-to-face sessions in a welcoming environment can be particularly beneficial. Access to a caring clinician provides not only a safe space to explore difficult emotions but also builds a support network essential for long-term recovery. The process encourages self-reflection and greater insight into behavioral patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. While the journey can be challenging at times, the rewards include enhanced emotional stability, improved interpersonal relationships, and a renewed sense of self-worth. In one notable case, the guidance provided by a highly trained therapist proved instrumental in navigating a tumultuous period. Through structured sessions and tailored interventions, the individual learned to identify stressors and develop healthier responses to adversity. This experience underscored the transformative impact that dedicated support can have on one's overall quality of life. In a region like Texas, community-based initiatives and accessible mental health programs further reinforce the value of professional help. These efforts emphasize early intervention, preventive care, and continuous support, ensuring that more people are equipped to face life's inevitable challenges. Ultimately, investing in mental well-being is an act of self-care that yields lifelong benefits. By embracing professional support, individuals can unlock new levels of emotional resilience and discover pathways to a brighter, more balanced future. Each step taken toward healing represents a commitment to personal growth, enabling a life filled with renewed optimism and strength. Embracing this transformative journey consistently paves the way for deeper understanding, lasting peace, and meaningful personal progress.
